A step-by-step example of the process of self-arranged settlement

  1. You make a request to the municipality and explore the possibilities of an agreed self-settlement (avtalt selvbosetting). Learn the criteria for renting a home.
  2. If the answer is yes, you are looking for rental housing in the private sector, with the specified communal criteria.
  3. At the same time, you should inform the mottak employee in charge of accommodation (bosettingsansvarlig) as soon as possible that you want to find private accommodation in a particular municipality.
  4. You find an apartment and draw up a rental contract. The contract must be unsigned.
  5. Write an application to the municipality for an agreed self-settlement, attach an unsigned rental contract, as well as a copy of the UDI decision to grant you a residence permit and other necessary documents.
  6. If all the formalities are met, the commune sends a request to IMDi and coordinates your placement with IMDi.
  7. If IMDi agrees on the settlement with the municipality, the municipality decides whether to approve your application.
  8. You sign a rental contract.
  9. You eventually move to a commune.
